What is local SEO and why does your business need it?
Local SEO is how people in your city find your business on Google. Here's what it means in plain English β and how to actually use it to get more customers.

You've probably heard the term "SEO" thrown around. But most explanations make it sound complicated β algorithms, backlinks, schema markup. Let's skip all of that and start with what actually matters to you as a business owner.
Plain English: Local SEO is what happens when someone types "plumber near me" or "best spa in Tacoma" into Google β and your business shows up. That's it. Everything else is just how you get there.
What is local SEO, exactly?
Local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of making your business show up when people search for services in your area. Unlike regular SEO β which tries to rank globally β local SEO focuses specifically on your city, neighborhood, or region.
When someone searches "dentist in Seattle" or "web designer near me," Google shows a map with 3 business listings at the top. That map section is called the Local Pack, and getting into it is worth more than almost anything else you can do for your business online.
Why does it matter for your business?
Here's the thing most business owners don't realize: the people searching on Google are ready to buy. They're not browsing. They're not just curious. They typed "emergency plumber Tacoma" because they need a plumber right now.
If you show up when they search β you get the call. If you don't show up β your competitor does. It's that simple.
And it gets better: local SEO is free. Unlike Google Ads where you pay every time someone clicks, organic local rankings cost you nothing per click. Once you're ranking, the traffic is free.
How local SEO actually works
Google decides who to show in local results based on three things:
- Relevance β Does your business offer what the person is searching for? Your website and Google profile need to clearly describe your services.
- Distance β How close is your business to the person searching? Google uses their location to show nearby results.
- Prominence β How well-known and trusted is your business? Reviews, your website quality, and mentions online all count here.
- Consistency β Is your business name, address, and phone number the same everywhere β Google, your website, directories? Inconsistency hurts rankings.
What you actually need to do
You don't need to understand every detail of how Google works. Here's the practical list:
- Set up your Google Business Profile β this is free and it's the most important thing you can do. Go to business.google.com and fill out every single field.
- Get reviews β ask every happy customer to leave a Google review. Even 10 reviews puts you ahead of most competitors.
- Have a fast, mobile-friendly website β Google checks your site quality. A slow WordPress site hurts your rankings.
- Use local keywords on your website β your city and service should appear naturally in your page titles, headings, and content.
- Be consistent β your business name, address, and phone number should be identical everywhere it appears online.
How long does it take to see results?
Honest answer: 3 to 6 months for meaningful results. Some improvements happen faster β setting up a Google Business Profile properly can move you into the map results within a few weeks. But climbing to the top for competitive searches takes consistent work over months.
The businesses that win at local SEO aren't the ones who do everything perfectly once. They're the ones who do the basics consistently β update their profile, get reviews, publish content β month after month.
